A two-minute voice note that made my day
A few days ago, an instructor sent me a voice note after finishing her depth session with a new group of students. They used Frenzel First before attending the course.
Here's what she did
"I tested the process. I didn't cover any in-person EQ exercises or cueing exercises; I didn't do what I usually do. I pretty much just went over the anatomy, made sure they had an understanding, and trusted the process to see how that would translate in the water."
She followed with.
"You've probably cut my dry theory in teaching equalization by a whole hour. Super, super stoked to have this tool in my back pocket."
An hour of dry theory, gone from her course. That's an hour she'd normally spend explaining tongue controls with kitchen utensils, hoping something clicks before the group gets frustrated. Instead, she went straight into the water with them.
"So yeah, well done. Super stoked. You are definitely forever in my back pocket."
This is the first time she's run a course like this, trusting Frenzel First to do the work on its own.
What came back
Both students did well. One struggled a little with one ear, but that tracked with a lingering cold, not a coordination issue. Everything else landed.
So she did what any good teacher does. She asked for the truth.
"I said, look, you guys are the first to try what I'm offering here. Any feedback or criticism is welcome."
Both students said it was easier to follow than other material they'd already worked through, including video content from well-known coaches they'd normally have sent straight to them.
"They found your content much easier to understand, and more, like, well communicated."
Why I'm sharing this
This is to show that we can influence the outcome of equalization issues/struggles in our beginner courses, by starting to introduce them to equalization shortly before the course starts instead of on day 1.
Students arrive more prepared. It frees up precious time for us instructors and lets us look more professional than sending some YouTube links.
The goal for Frenzel First is to improve the first freediving experience for students and instructors.
